Revealing the Unconscious-Artist Statement

Revealing the Unconscious is the term used to explain my mind-set while creating art. When starting a piece, regardless of the medium, I don’t have an itinerary. I don’t have a path to follow or a plan in mind. Most times, I don’t even know what I’m trying to create. I use paint aggressively. I start spontaneously and refine the spontaneity into completed identifiable individuals. I can see spirit in a crooked, broken line created by a brush stroke, and with that spirit, I create my art.

I relate my creation process to psychological inkblot testing. I start out creating shapes that my hand designates. After making many shapes in different colors and different sizes, they collide together to form a giant mess of color. I am left with an “inkblot” or just a canvas of several colors. This is when I take a step back and analyze what has been created. I study my piece until I begin to see forms and figures. Most times, I clearly see human characters or animals. As I begin to make out these figures, I develop their identities by exaggerating what is before me. Staying true to the nature of spontaneity, I will leave some of the inkblot unformed. This compliments both the figures I have created and my primary intent.

Revealing the Unconscious is about my own self-discovery. Reflection of my work truly allows me to understand where my energy comes from. While creating, experiences and emotions reveal themselves; I can relate my results to experiences I have had in my own life. My art is repressed feelings coming through a different vocal chord. I have lived through and felt the art that I portray. This art is what I look like inside.
